Pam Golding Properties Pietermaritzburg office, together with Pick n Pay, has stepped forward to assist the Peter Pan School for mentally handicapped children with monthly donations of groceries throughout 2012.

Situated in Pietermaritzburg, the school caters for 163 boys and girls ranging from six to 21 years of age, most of whom are from poor families, children’s homes or orphans looked after by a grandparent or family member. Many of the learners have multiple disabilities and the school offers an individual learning programme for each one, with a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, and enhancing life skills.

Comments Sheila Wills, principal of Peter Pan School: “We are extremely grateful to Div Du Toit – who initiated the project, and Belinda Becker of Pam Golding Properties, who have arranged a sponsorship of groceries each month in conjunction with Pick n Pay’s Victoria Road branch. This has made a real difference to our children and our school, and will enable us to try to expand our pre-vocational programme and therefore help prepare our children for a more productive future.

“We would like to expand our pre-vocational skills programme and hope to include the use of a sewing machine, basket weaving, gardening, worm farming/fertilizer production, mosaic, cooking and beadwork, as we feel this will give them a better chance to be employed when they leave school,” she says.

In addition to the food donated, Pam Golding Properties has made cash donations to the school, toys at Christmas last year and rugby balls during the 2010 Soccer World Cup, while clothes are also donated as they are collected.

Says Belinda Becker: “We will continue to assist as far as possible. Anyone wishing to assist with donations of clothes and other items can hand these in at our offices at 7 Wembley Terrace, Wembley, Pietermaritzburg, and Div Du Toit will ensure these are delivered to Peter Pan school.”
