When Gauteng-based beauty products specialist and manufacturer, AMKA decided to upgrade its disaster recovery efforts for its messaging platform, it turned to AVeS and a Microsoft solution to pave the way.
After a thorough review of AMKA’s operations, AVeS, a reseller and systems integration partner of value-added distributor Weston, decided that the ageing Microsoft Exchange 2003 environment would need to be replaced in its entirety.
The company then built a migration model for the manufacturer that included a new solution for total “rebuild and restore” via backup media, should the company be presented with a recovery situation. Part of the goal was to ensure the client had access to a solution that would help reduce the excessive time needed for recovery and restoration. After closer inspection, AVeS suggested that the company implement a continuous replicated solution that was both platform and application autonomous. This native replication would be built off of the latest server-based technology, namely Microsoft Server 2012 with Hyper-V.
“The AVeS team worked closely with the client to ensure that we understood exactly what AMKA needed and what their business requirements were from the start. We also looked to technologies, such as virtualisation and replication, to aid us in the client’s migration requirements,” says Charl Ueckermann, managing director at AVeS.
The new system consisted of a new server infrastructure that was loaded with Microsoft’s virtualisation and replication solution, Hyper-V 2012. This solution would help avoid unnecessary licensing costs for a duplicated disaster recovery platform, which would host the Exchange replica. Then, using System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager, the Exchange server was virtualised and moved into the new environment. The original hardware was re-deployed onto Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V was added.
A Hyper-V replica was then configured for the Exchange virtual machine and the failover server was transported to the secondary site. AMKA hereby received a fully replicated platform that held four states of its messaging platform. In the event of a data failure, the system could be recovered easily, timeously and with very little data loss.
“The main business motivators for this project were that the client wanted a solution that would support simplicity and cost efficiency. By making use of technology that already existed within the business, the client was able to avoid spiralling IT costs while still taking advantage of an optimal solution for its needs,” ends Ueckermann.
